“What did I tell you about Xavier Wodehouse?” Jerome scolded, his hand resting lightly on her elbow as they walked through the club toward the exit. She didn’t need the escort, but felt the touch was more about politeness than controlling her movement.

“We had lunch. It’s not like we’re engaged.”

He stopped in the middle of the room, causing a couple to walk around them with disgruntled mutters. “What?”

Eva rolled her eyes. The detective was showing more emotion than she’d seen from him during the previous case, and it was confusing her.

“Never mind. I was fine. I just wanted to leave.”

“He looked like he was going to beg you to stay—perhaps hold your hand hostage until you agreed.”

“Don’t be dramatic,” she said. Then again, he wasn’t completely wrong. Despite Jerome’s intrusion into their conversation, she had felt as if Xavier was close to pleading with her to stay.

“It’s not drama if it’s true.” He flashed a smile and then moved forward again, a light pressure at the small of her back now.

“I’m perfectly capable of walking out of this club on my own, thank you.”

“I don’t doubt that for a moment,” he said as they stepped out into bright sunshine. “I just wanted to see if you needed a ride home.”

She paused, her hand going up to shade her eyes from the sun. “A ride? Please tell me you didn’t come all the way out here to give me a ride home.”

His eyes were hidden by the dark sunglasses he’d slipped on the minute they stepped outside, but she caught a tug at the corner of his lips. A near smile.

“No. I came here to make sure Xavier didn’t swindle you out of a meal, or more.” His statement was bold, and he made no apologies about it.

“How did you know where we’d be?” She could tell it wasn’t the question he’d been expecting, but he conceded by shrugging his shoulders.

“I’m a detective.”

She pursed her lips.

“All right. I’ve looked into Xavier before and know that he spends most of his time here—whether he’s working or not. I had a feeling he’d bring you to his favorite location.”

“Good detective work.”

“I try.”

He nodded toward the valet, and moments later his unmarked car was being delivered.

“You used a valet?” she said with a smile.

“When in Rome…”

He opened the passenger side door for her, and she climbed in before she had time to decide whether or not she wanted to risk being in a car with the handsome detective.

He walked around and slid behind the wheel. “Back to the Key’s?” he asked, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

“Yes. Please.”

He pulled away from the curb and turned down the long driveway that led to the main road. Greens stretched out on both sides of the car, and she caught him admiring the view.

“Do you golf, Detective?”

“It’s Jerome, remember?”

“I do,” she said.

“I’ve been known to spend time on a greenway now and then.”

“Which means you’re a golfer. My father said it like that, too, and he was certainly more than just a fair-weather golfer.
